Wood is a natural, hygroscopic material: it absorbs moisture from humid air and swells; it releases moisture into dry air and shrinks. The Anatomy of Solid 3/4" Hardwood: Beautiful But Reactive

The Structural Core: Consists of 7 to 11 layers of high-grade Baltic birch or hardwood plywood, arranged in a cross-ply orientation (each layer glued with its grain running at 90 degrees to the layer above and below it). When one layer attempts to expand horizontally, the adjacent perpendicular layers mechanically restrain it.
2. The Hardwood Lamella (Wear Layer): A top layer of genuine hardwood — such as White Oak, Red Oak, Walnut, or Maple — bonded with waterproof adhesives under immense hydraulic pressure.

Because of this cross-laminated architecture, engineered hardwood is 70% to 80% more dimensionally stable than solid wood. It expands and contracts uniformly at a fraction of the rate of solid planks, making it immune to severe winter gapping and summer cupping when properly acclimatized.

The Wear Layer: Can Engineered Hardwood Actually Be Refinished?

The most persistent myth among GTA homeowners is that engineered hardwood is "disposable" and cannot be sanded. In reality, the longevity of an engineered floor depends entirely on the thickness and milling method of its wear layer:

Grade Levels: Where Can Each Type Be Installed?

The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) sets strict grade-level installation standards that protect your investment:

• Basements (Below-Grade): Solid hardwood is strictly forbidden over basement concrete slabs due to subterranean moisture vapor transmission. Engineered hardwood with an approved vapor retarder or moisture-cure urethane adhesive is fully warrantied for basements.
• Condominiums (Concrete Subfloors): Solid hardwood cannot be installed directly over concrete slabs without building an expensive plywood sleeper subfloor (raising floor heights and interfering with doors). Engineered hardwood can be glued down or floated over acoustic membranes seamlessly.
• Wide Plank Trends (6" to 10" Planks): If you desire modern wide planks, solid wood is structurally unfeasible in Ontario's climate — wide solid boards cup severely. Engineered hardwood is the only medium that allows ultra-wide 7.5", 8.5", and 10" planks to remain dead-flat year-round.

The Indoor Humidity Protocol: Protecting Your Investment
